Polk State recognizes student athletes at annual banquet

Polk State College honored its student athletes last night at the annual Athletic Awards Banquet on campus in Winter Haven.

“We are very proud of the success our student athletes have achieved academically and athletically,” said Athletic Director Bing Tyus in his opening remarks.

“There are three reasons we have been very successful over the past six years,” he said. “First, great coaches and student athletes. Second, financial support from the college and community. And third, great support from our president, Dr. Eileen Holden, who values life outside the classroom and supports every program here at the college.”

Coaches for cheerleading, baseball, basketball, softball, soccer, and volleyball recognized their players for individual and team accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.

Following those presentations, Reggie Webb, vice president for student services, presented the following awards:

  • Female Athlete of the Year: Kayla Montgomery, softball.
  • Male Athlete of the Year: Daniel Sweet, baseball.
  • Female Scholar Athlete Award: Ashley Hass, volleyball.
  • Male Scholar Athlete Award: Casey Schroeder, baseball.
  • Team GPA Award: Baseball (3.22).

“As student athletes, continue to strive for academic excellence, the president, administrators, faculty, and staff are proud of them,” said Webb.

During the program, Jeff Ellis, head softball coach, announced that after this season Polk State would retire the numbers of Stephanie Koutsoumbaris (12), Maggie Roberts (27), and Rose Stevens (2) in honor of their accomplishments as Eagles.
