In a baseball battle of the birds, the Polk State Eagles soared past the Daytona State Falcons 4-2 today at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.
In the third inning, the Eagles picked up their final two runs.
With two out, Raudy Martinez singled and stole second. Cody Burgess followed with a walk on a passed ball that sent Martinez to third. Diewert then drew a walk on four pitches, loading the bases. When Tommy Gamble was hit by a pitch, Martinez scored. Kulina then walked on four pitches, scoring Burgess and giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
The Falcons scored twice in the sixth inning on a double, a walk, a sacrifice fly, and a single.
It rained during most of the game.
"There were tough conditions to play under today for both teams," said Head Coach Al Corbeil.
"I thought both teams played good baseball, and both teams pitched well. We just happened to get out in front and hold the lead today."
Starting pitcher Tommy Romero picked up his first win of the season. He worked 5.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking four and striking out seven.
Johnnie Schneider pitched two-thirds of an inning and gave up a hit, a walk, and a run.
Tworek worked two innings, allowing a hit and recording a strikeout.
Kelly earned his second save. In the ninth inning he gave up one hit while striking out three.
Kulina went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run, a walk, and a stolen base.
Cullum had a single and an RBI.
Martinez (1-for-3) stole a base and scored a run.
Burgess finished with a run and a walk.
Diewert singled, scored twice, and drove in a pair of runs.
Gamble had a run and an RBI.
Cole Warken collected a pair of single in two at-bats.
The Eagles (4-1, No. 7 FCSAA) play Seminole State College on Monday at 5 p.m. at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.
