Cody Burgess stroked a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth, scoring Zach Diewert from second base and giving Polk State a 2-1 win over Seminole State College of Florida tonight at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.
Leading off the inning, Diewert worked the count to 3-2 before drawing a walk.
Brandon Gali then bunted a 3-2 pitch to the pitcher, who threw late to second base in an attempt to get a force out on Diewert.
After Kaylor Kulina struck out, Burgess delivered the game-winning hit on a 1-2 pitch.
The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth, when the Raiders took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run.
The Eagles tied it in the bottom of the inning. Zach Biermann led off with a double, and Isaiah Cullum and Raudy Martinez walked to load the bases. With one out, Diewert lofted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Biermann.
Tonight's victory was the third come-from-behind win at home for Polk State this season.
"It never gets old seeing that happen here," said Head Coach Al Corbeil. "I'd like to see us play a little better overall, but when you come out on top and win some close ones late, I think that helps build some confidence for games down the road."
Starting pitcher Joe Strzelecki did not allow a hit until the fifth inning. He worked five and two-thirds innings, allowing two hits and one run while walking two and striking out three.
Diewert collected a hit, a run, an RBI, and two walks.
Martinez had two hits and a walk.
Cullum doubled in three at bats.
The Eagles (5-1, No. 7 FCSAA) travel to Palatka tomorrow to play St. Johns River State College at 5 p.m.
