Eagles rally for 11-3 win over St. Johns River

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Polk State rallied for five runs and went on to an 11-3 win over St. Johns River State College tonight at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

Raudy Martinez started the fifth-inning rally with a leadoff double down the right field line. Cole Warken then walked on four pitches, and Zach Diewert singled to left field to load the bases. 

Tommy Gamble took a 3-2 pitch for ball four, sending Martinez home from third. 

Cody Burgess followed with a single that scored Warken and Diewert. Gamble was out at third on the play. 

With Brandon Gali at the plate, a wild pitch sent Burgess to second, and he scored on a Gali single. 

With two out, Zach Biermann singled to right. When the rightielder misplayed the ball, Biermann advanced to third and Gali scored, giving the Eagles a 6-3 lead. 

They added four more runs in the sixth and a solo run in the seventh for the 11-3 victory. 

Starting pitcher Zak Spivy earned the win to even his record at 1-1. He worked six innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) while walking one and striking out five. 

Justin Tworek pitched the seventh and eighth innings, giving up a hit and a walk while recording four strikeouts. 

Justin Gill pitched a hitless ninth inning while striking out two. 

Polk State pounded out 14 hits of St. Johns River pitchers, and every Eagle batter had at least one hit. 

Martinez went 3-for-5 with a double, home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. 

Diewert collected three hits and scored twice. 

Warken (2-for-4) walked and scored twice. 

Biermann singled, walked scored a run, and drove in a run. 

Burgess finished the night with three RBI along with a walk and two runs. 

Gali singled, scored once, and drove in a pair of runs.

Gamble went 1-for-2 with two walks, a run, and an RBI 

Yeison Gomez singled and drove in a run.   

The Eagles (8-4, No. 10, FCSAA) travel to Gainesville on Friday for a 3 p.m. game against Santa Fe College.
