Eagles soar past Hawks 9-2

The Polk State Eagles soared to their fourth straight win tonight, beating Hillsborough Community College 9-2 at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

The Hawks got on the board first, scoring an unearned run in the second. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Polk State had runners on first and second with no out, but Hillsborough turned a triple play. 

The Eagles were held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when Cody Burgess led off with a walk and Brandon Gali had an infield single, Polk State's first hit of the game. 

After Burgess was caught stealing, Zach Biermann and Isaiah Cullum walked to load the bases. 

With Zach Diewert at the plate, Gali scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1. 

Diewert then doubled, scoring Biermann and Cullum to give the Eagles a 3-1 advantage. 

In the top of the eighth, Hillsborough got a run on a single, a stolen base, and another single, cutting the lead to 3-2. 

In the bottom of the inning, however, the Eagles sent 11 hitters to the plate, scoring six runs with two outs for a 9-2 lead. 

The Eagles had 12 walks in the game. 

Gali went 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI. 

Skylar Frey singled, walked, scored a run, and drove in two runs. 

Diewert had two RBI along with his double. 

Burgess singled, scored a run, and drew three walks. 

Biermann scored twice and walked twice. 

Cole Warken walked twice and scored once. 

Joe Strzelecki and Yeison Gomez each walked and scored a run.

Cullum had two walks, a sacrifice, and a run scored. 

Starting pitcher Jonathan Bermudez (2-1) earned the win. In six innings he allowed one unearned run and three hits, walking none and striking out six. 

Zach Schneider worked two innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts.

Justin Tworek retired the Hawks in order in the ninth. 

The Eagles (28-12, 13-6, No. 6 FCSAA) face Hillsborough again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Tampa.
