Eagles win eighth straight

Polk State won its eighth straight game today, defeating South Florida 5-2 at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven. 

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. 

Raudy Martinez led off with an infield single, and Cole Warken walked. 

After Martinez scored on Zach Scott's single, Warken took third on a wild pitch and scored on a fielder's choice. 

In the bottom of the third, Martinez drew a leadoff walk, stole second, and scored on Warken's single, increasing the lead to 3-0. 

The Panthers answered with a run in the top of the fourth on a single and a double. 

In the bottom of the inning, however, Martinez hit a two-run homer, giving Polk State a 5-1 advantage. 

South Florida added a run in the sixth on a bunt single, a sacrifice bunt, and a double. 

Chad Tworek (3-2) started on the mound and earned the win. In five and one-third innings he allowed two runs on six hits while striking out three. 

Drew Marino and Luis Ferrer held the Panthers hitless until the ninth inning, when Zach Schneider picked up his ninth save. 

Martinez went 2-for-4 with a homer, a walk, a stolen base, two RBI, and three runs. 

Warken singled, walked, stole a base, scored a run, and drove in a run. 

Scott had a single, a walk, and an RBI. 

Zach Biermann went 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base, 

The Eagles (38-10, 22-5, No. 2 FCSAA, No. 6 NJCAA) hit the road Monday to play State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota at 6 p.m. in Bradenton.
