Trailing 6-3 in the top of the ninth inning, Polk State rallied for five runs and a 9-6 win over South Florida State College tonight in Avon Park.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and went ahead 3-0 in the third. The Panthers countered with four runs in the fourth, one in the sixth, and one in the eighth for the 6-3 advantage.
Polk State had 14 hits, including four doubles.
Danny Berg went 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, two RBI, and three runs.
James Boldin doubled, singled twice, and drove in three runs.
Trent Sinkfield had a 2-for-5 game with two runs and an RBI.
Timothy Watkins picked up the win in relief. He pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing a hit and two walks with one strikeout.
Billy McKay earned his fifth save, retiring three in a row in the ninth.
Tate Dearing started on the mound. In 4.1 innings he allowed four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out three.
Carter Slentz relieved Dearing and yielded two runs on four hits while striking out three in 2.2 innings.
The Eagles (14-17, 4-7) play South Florida (11-22, 2-9) again Saturday at 1 p.m. at Bing Tyus Yard in Winter Haven.
