DAYTONA - Long-time Polk State College men's basketball coach Matt Furjanic recently earned his 500th win. The Eagles defeated Daytona State College 55-47 on the road on December 7 to give Furjanic his landmark victory.
Under Furjanic's leadership the last 12 years, the Eagles have become one of the top NJCAA teams in the state of Florida, ranking as high as #3 in the Florida College System Activities Association Men's Basketball Poll two different seasons. While at Polk his teams have won 53 percent of their games (213-188) overall, won 20 or more games in a season 5 times.
Since taking over the program, the Eagles have won a total of five Suncoast Conference titles; all in the past nine seasons (2003, 2004, 2008, 2009, 2011). He has also led the Eagles to five state tournament appearances. During his tenure at Polk, over forty players have gone on to earn scholarships at a four-year institution.
Furjanic's career record as head coach is 500-338. He has had head coaching stints at Division I schools Robert Morris University, Marist College and Division III University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. While at Robert Morris and Marist, he led both programs to the NCAA Division I Tournament.
The Eagles, the defending Suncoast Conference Champions, are 6-6 this season and are receiving votes in the latest Florida College System Activities Association Men's Basketball Coaches' Poll.
