Polk State Men’s Basketball Releases 2012-13 Schedule
WINTER HAVEN — Polk State's 2012-13 hoops campaign is still three months from tip-off, but Eagle fans can fill in their calendars now.
Polk State Men's Basketball released its entire schedule Wednesday, a slate that inludes 15 home contests. Among the team's home opponents are Indian River, last season's Southern Conference runner-up; Prince George's (Md.) Community College, last season's National Junior College Athletic Assocation Region XX DIII Champions; and College of Central Florida, last season's Mid-Florida Conference Champions.
The team's away matches include Santa Fe, last season's Mid-Florida Conference runner-up, and always-strong Brevard.
In all, Polk plays four non-league foes that participated in the FCSAA/NJCAA Region VIII Men's Basketball Tournament. The challenging schedule features at least five matchups against teams that won 20 games in 2011-12.
"What we try to do each year is play against some of the top schools in Florida," said Head Basketball Coach Matt Furjanic.
Turning to tournament play, Polk is scheduled to play in the 11th Annual Florida Men's JUCO Shootout on Dec. 7-8 in Gainesville. The Eagles will also be playing in the inaugural State College of Florida Tournament on Dec. 15-16 in Bradenton. Dates and matchups for the tournament will be announced later.
"We are playing in two tournaments, which will give us the opportunity to play against teams that are not on our schedule. We want our non-conference schedule to be difficult so it can prepare us for conference," said Furjanic.
The Eagles begin the 2012-13 regular season on Nov. 3 against Rise Academy at the Winter Haven Health Center.
