Polk State got its first win of the season in its first home game, beating Montverde Prep 88-66 tonight.

After a slow start, the Eagles soared to a 23-8 lead. They increased it to 50-29 at the half.

"It feels good to get the first win because we had a tough overtime loss to Broward on Saturday, and you just don't know how the players will come back and react," said Head Coach Matt Furjanic.

"We got good contributions from everybody tonight, and everybody played together and played with energy.

"It's a long season, and we want to keep working on the fundamentals. As a coach you still see mistakes out there, but it's always nice to get a win."

Kareem Harris led the Eagles with 18 points, while Bernard Samuel had 16.

Elijah Cottrill added 14 points and five assists, while Nigel Grant tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.

Djuro Pantos grabbed seven rebounds, and Shafeek Taylor had five assists.

The Eagles (1-1) play again at home Wednesday at 7 p.m. against IMG Academy.
