Polk State opened its basketball season tonight with an 87-62 win over Score Academy in Winter Haven.
The Eagles built a 23-8 lead in the first half before Score Academy cut the lead to six points as the first half ended 38-32.
Twice at the start of the second half Score Academy trimmed the lead to one point, but it could not tie or go ahead.
As the half progressed, the Eagle steadily increased their lead on the way to victory.
"In the first half we gave up 32 points, and 24 of them were on three-pointers," said Head Coach Matt Furjanic.
"I thought we started the game not sluggish but maybe not respecting the opponent enough and giving them open shots.
"I'm happier with the way we played in the second half. We played harder, and I thought we did a much better job pressuring the ball defensively.
"A lot of times good defense creates good offense, and I think that's what happened for us in the second half.
"And it's always nice to win the first game."
The Eagles (1-0) play an exhibition game against Sam Rines Academy on Monday at 6 p.m. in Winter Haven.
