Down 10 points with 1:10 left to play, the Polk State Eagles rallied to beat the Broward College Seahawks 86-83 this afternoon in Fort Lauderdale.
With the Eagles trailing 83-73, Troy Simons got fouled and made the first free throw, cutting the lead to 83-74. After he missed the second free throw, Broward got the rebound and brought the ball down court.
Elijah Cottrill got a steal, brought the ball up court, and passed to Troy Simons, who hit a three-point shot with 45 seconds on the clock, cutting the lead to 83-77.
On Broward's inbounds pass, Darelle Porter got a deflection, and Elijah Cottrill got the loose ball and threw it up court to Troy Simons, who took a three-point shot and was fouled with 27 seconds left.
Simons made all three free throws to cut Broward's lead to 83-80.
Broward inbounded the ball but, bringing it up court for a final shot, threw the ball out of bounds.
Polk State inbounded with 19 seconds on the clock, getting the ball to Cotttill. He gave it to Simons on the wing, who passed to Dayjar Dickson. Dickson penetrated and dished it out to Cottrill, who hit a three-pointer 12 seconds left to tie the game 83-83.
The Seahawks then inbounded and threw the ball up court. Porter made a steal and passed to Cottrill, who buried a three-pointer with one second left to put the Eagles up 86-83.
The Seahawks missed a final shot with one second left, giving the Eagles their second straight come-from-behind victory.
Troy Simons led the Eagles with 24 points, including four three-pointers.
Elijah Cottrill hit five three-point shots and finished with 21 points.
The Eagles (5-1, No. 6 FCSAA) return to action Wednesday when they face TAAG at 7 p.m. in Winter Haven.
