Polk State began Suncoast Conference play yesterday in Winter Haven with a 96-72 win over State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota.

With the victory, the Eagles remain undefeated at home this season.

Polk State built a 44-31 lead at halftime and started strong in the second half, increasing the lead to 54-36 at the 17-minute mark and finishing with a season-high 96 points.

"It's always good to start off conference play on the right foot," said Head Coach Brandon Giles.

"We wanted to come out this game and send a message and let others know we want to make some noise this year in the Suncoast Conference.

"I credit State College of Florida and Coach Parks, who is in his first year and doing a great job and getting his team to play with a lot of energy.

"We played well defensively tonight and we scored the ball well. We still have a lot to work on, but overall this was great win for the guys. I'm excited about the future for this team."

Tekorian "TK" Smith led the Eagles with 23 points. He added five assists, two steals, and a block.

Milz Tatum netted 15 points, shooting three-for-three from beyond the arc, grabbing three rebounds, and dishing out seven assists.

Christian Woolridge tallied 13 points and made eight rebounds.

Alsean Evans recorded double figures in points (12) and rebounds (12).

Bernat Vanaclocha finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.

Caleb Townsend added nine points and four steals.

The Eagles (8-9, 1-0) return to action at St. Petersburg College at 4 p.m. Saturday.
