Polk State basketball soared past Warner University JV tonight, winning 109-50 in Winter Haven.
Six Eagles scored in double figures as the team tallied more than a hundred points for the second straight game. Many of those points came on fast breaks, and fans can look forward to seeing a more up-tempo game this season.
"We definitely want to play a lot faster this year," said Head Coach Brandon Giles.
"I think that with the athletes we have we'll be able to do that, but for us to play fast like we want to we have to bring it on the defensive end every night."
As he starts his third season at Polk State, Giles also likes the depth of his team.
"We have a much deeper team now, which allows us as coaches to hold guys accountable," he said. "If someone's not doing it right then we bring the next man up, and we don't drop off a lot when the next man comes up. So I'm excited about that, especially once we get deeper into the season and play some more talented teams."
Malcom Stevenson had a team-high 16 points to go with six rebounds.
Dejan Illinic scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
VanAubrey Thomas also scored 15, adding eight rebounds and four assists.
Tekorian "TK" Smith and Bernat Vanaclocha Sanchez each finished with 12 points, while Derrick "DJ" Molden had 11 points and five rebounds.
The Eagles (2-0) return to action Wednesday when they face Victory Rock Prep at 7 p.m. in Winter Haven on Veterans Appreciation Day. All U.S. military veterans receive free admission with proof of service.
