Eagles Sweep Daytona 2-1, 8-0
Eagle freshman Maggie Roberts (Lakeland/Lake Gibson) homered for the fourth time in five games to lead the Polk State College softball team to a sweep of Daytona State College (3-9) Thursday 2-1 and 8-0 at the DiamondPlex.
It was the second sweep this week for the Eagles (9-3), who have won five games in a row. Thursday also marked the second time in a week the Eagles have run-ruled an opponent.
In their last five games, they have out-scored their opponents 36-3.
"We're playing the way we are capable of," said Polk State College coach Jeff Ellis. "It's a deep lineup. We've got 18 kids and I feel bad about the fact that we can only put nine of them on the field at a time."
Eagle sophomore shortstop Jen Hamil drilled a two run-double to center field to lead Polk over Daytona in the first game.
Freshman Haleigh Corbally (4-0) logged the victory. She held the Falcons to one run on seven hits. She fanned six and walked one.
The Eagles tallied six runs on six hits as they batted around in the second inning of the second game. Roberts led off the inning with a solo home run. Rose Stevens, Stephanie Koutsoumbaris and Kylee Stearns each drove in a run.
Stevens doubled in two more runs in the third.
Kayla Montgomery (3-0) earned the victory, holding the Falcons to three hits over five innings. She fanned five and walked two.
Polk hosts Florida State College of Jacksonville Sunday at 1 p.m. The Blue Wave is ranked fifth in the NJCAA national pre-season poll.
