Bowen Ties School Record As Eagles Sweep St. Johns
Polk State College freshman pitcher Taylor Bowen (Gainesville) tied a school record Saturday as the eighth-ranked Eagles (12-4) swept St. Johns River 4-1 and 8-3 Saturday on the road.
Bowen (3-3) fanned 14 in the second game, tying former Eagle Greta Cecchetti. Bowen gave up three runs, one earned, on six hits. She walked one.
Freshman Maggie Roberts (Lakeland/Lake Gibson), sophomore Brooke Threlkeld (Auburndale) and freshman Stephanie Koutsoumbaris (Palm Harbor/University) each drove in two runs for Polk.
Roberts extended her hit streak to 10 games.
Sophomore Jen Hamil (Santa Fe, Texas) was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Freshman Kayla Montgomery (Lakeland/George Jenkins) posted the victory in the first game, holding St. Johns to one run on four hits. She fanned two and walked two. Freshman Haleigh Corbally (Havana/Monroe) earned her first save of the season. She allowed two hits over three innings.
Koutsoumbaris was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Roberts doubled in a run.
The Eagles play Brevard Sunday, February 17, on the road.
