Eagles Split With No. 1 Indian River State
The No. 8-ranked Polk State College softball team split its games with No. 1-ranked Indian River State College Wednesday at the DiamondPlex in Winter Haven.
Polk State won the first game 4-3 and suffered an 8-0, run-rule shortened loss in the second game.
Eagle sophomore Brooke Threlkeld (Auburndale) broke a 3-3 tie with a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh as the Eagles edged the Pioneers 4-3 in the opener.
Eagle freshman Taylor Bowen (Gainesville) earned the victory, improving to 5-4. She held Indian River to three runs on seven hits. She fanned five and walked three.
Eagle sophomore Jen Hamil (Santa Fe, Texas) slugged a first home run of the season, a solo shot.
Eagle freshman Maggie Roberts (Lakeland/Lake Gibson) and freshman Stephanie Koutsoumbaris (Palm Harbor) each drove in a run.
Indian River pitcher Savanna Hewett one-hit Polk State in the second game as Eagle starter Haleigh Corbally (Havana) struggled through four innings as she suffered her first loss of the season (5-1).
The Eagles (14-6) travel Friday to Miami Dade College.
