Stephanie Koutsoumbaris blasted a walkoff grand slam in game one and added another homer and 4 RBI in game two as the Polk State Eagles opened Suncoast Conference play by sweeping a doubleheader from State College of Florida, Sarasota-Manatee at the DiamondPlex in Winter Haven.
With the Eagles trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh in game one, Koutsoumbaris came to the plate with no outs and the bases loaded. She slammed a pitch over the fence in left, touching off a celebration at home plate and giving the Eagles a 5-4 victory.
Haleigh Corbally got the win, striking out five and improving her record to 9-3.
Koutsoumbaris kept up her hot hitting in the nightcap, slugging another home run while collecting 4 RBI as the Eagles got an 11-3 run-rule win in six innings.
The Eagles scored 8 runs in the first inning to support winning pitcher Kayla Montgomery (12-3). She helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Kara Seymour (3-for-4) added 3 RBI, while Maggie Roberts went 2-for-3 and Erica Morrisey had a 1-for-3 game.
"This was a great way to open conference play," said Eagles head coach Jeff Ellis.
The Eagles, who extended their winning streak to 12, move to 29-8 (2-0 in the Suncoast Conference) and host the Netherlands in exhibition games Friday at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the DiamondPlex in Winter Haven.
