Eagles open state tournament with win

Polk State started the NJCAA Region 8/FCSAA Softball Tournament today with a 14-5 five-inning win over Gulf Coast State College.

Winning pitcher Haleigh Corbally improved to 16-4. She and the Eagles jumped off to a fast start, leading 12-0 after four innings. In the top of the fifth, however, Gulf Coast rallied for five runs 

In the bottom of the fifth, with the Eagles needing one run to get a run-rule victory, Deanna Littles slammed a two-run walkoff home run for the 14-5 final score.

FCSAA State Player of the Year Stephanie Koutsoumbaris led the Eagle offense, going 4-for-4 with a grand slam, five RBI, and a stolen base.

Littles (3-for-4) drove in three runs. Erica Morrissey went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Kara Seymour (2-for-3) had an RBI, Rose Stevens (1-for-3) stole two bases, and Kaitlyn Warren (2-for-2) had a home run, a stolen base, and an RBI.

The Eagles play again tonight at 7 Central Time.
