Eagles rally to split with Lake-Sumter

Mary-Margaret Maggard hit two solo home runs, Mikayla Barwig blasted a three-run homer, and Polk State came back from a 9-2 deficit to beat Lake-Sumter State College 12-9 in the first game of a doubleheader today in Winter Haven. 

Maggard hit her first homer in the fourth inning, cutting the lead to 9-3. Breanna Snell followed with a single and Riley Dunn reached first on a bunt single, sending pinch-runner Dakoda Bozeman to third. 

Heather Novis then singled, scoring Bozeman and advancing Novis to second. Kelsey Armstrong reached first on an error, and Novis scored from second. Ally Baert's double down the right-field line scored Armstrong, making the score 9-6. 

Maggard homered over the center-field fence in the fifth, trimming the lead to 9-7. 

Armstrong led off the bottom of the sixth with a bunt single. After Jada Wesley's grounder forced Armstrong at second, Baert singled to left and took second on the throw home as Wesley reached third. 

Barwig then homered to give Polk State a 10-9 lead. 

The Eagles added two more runs when Maggard doubled and scored on a single by Ashlyn Curtis. Curtis then stole second and scored on an error, putting the Eagles up 12-9. 

The Lakehawks threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with one out, but Leanna Otte got a double play to end the game. 

Taite Powell started and allowed nine runs (three unearned) on nine hits. Maddie Scott took over in the third, giving up two hits and no runs. Otte entered the game to start the sixth inning. She held the Lakehawks hitless while allowing four walks. 

Barwig finished with five RBI. 

Maggard went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. 

Baert singled, doubled, scored a run, and drove in a run. 

Wesley had a pair of singles, a run, and a stolen base. 

Armstrong went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs. 

In game two, the Eagles had a 6-1 lead after five innings, but the Lakehawks rallied for five runs in the sixth to tie the score at 6. 

The game went to extra innings, and Lake-Sumter scored a runner from second on an error, taking a 7-6 lead. 

The Eagles failed to score in their half of the frame, and the Lakehawks won 7-6.  

Barwig went 3-for-4. 

Baert singled twice, scored, and drove in two runs. 

Curtis had two singles and a run. 

Riley Dunn went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. 

Armstrong singled twice and scored a run. 

Farley, Maggard, Novis, and Wesley each singled. 

Powell allowed three runs (one unearned) on eight hits in seven and two-thirds of an inning. Otte yielded three runs on three hits in the final inning. 

The Eagles (11-17) begin Suncoast Conference play Tuesday when they travel to Fort Myers to play Florida Southwestern at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
