Polk State got off to a good start in the 2019 softball season, winning two of three games today at the Kickoff Classic in Clearwater, Fla.

After starting the day with a 5-3 win over Miami Dade College, the Eagles defeated Florida State College at Jacksonville 8-4.

Against Miami Dade, Anizya Vargas went three-for-three with a stolen base and two RBI. Destinee Jackson singled, doubled, and drove in two runs.

Vargas also went three-for-five against FSCJ, while Lauren Estrada had a two-for-five game, and Jackson singled and hit a home run.

Against Eastern Florida State College (No. 8 FCSAA) in the final game, Polk State battled through nine innings before falling 11-9.

Jackson homered again, and Victoria Perry had a double and a triple in five at-bats.

"It's great to start the season by winning two out of three games today," said Head Coach Donna Byars.

"We had good pitching and timely hitting, and we look forward to continued success this season."

The Eagles return to action Thursday with a doubleheader against Lake-Sumter State College starting at 4 p.m. in Winter Haven.
