Eagles fall to Hawks

Polk State lost twice to Hillsborough Community College in Tampa.

The Eagles had a 3-1 lead in game one, but the Hawks rallied for five runs in the fourth inning and another run in the fifth. Polk State put another run on the board in the seventh before losing 7-4.

Destiny Breeden went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.

Anizya Vargas singled twice, scored a run, and drove in a run.

Alayna Carranco had a 2-for-3 game and scored a run. She also pitched 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs on 12 hits. 

Megan Wilder worked the final 1.2 innings, giving up two hits and no runs. 

 

The Eagles came up a run short in game two, losing 9-8.

They led 5-3 after the top of the fourth inning, but Hillsborough put six runs on the board in the bottom of the inning. 

Polk State rallied for three runs in the fifth but could get no closer. 

Lauren Estrada blasted a three-run homer, while Vargas also homered, walked, drove in two runs and scored three. 

Destinee Jackson went 3-for-4 with a run and a double.

Victoria Gonzalez singled, doubled, scored twice, and drove in a run.

Alexis McBride singled twice, and Breeden and Carranco each singled. 

Starting pitcher Sarah Grindrod worked three innings and yielded seven runs (three earned) on eight hits and five walks.

Wilder allowed a pair of runs on one hit in 1.1 innings.

Carranco gave up no hits or runs in 1.2 innings.

 

The Eagles (20-26, 6-11) return to action Tuesday for a Sophomore Night doubleheader against State College of Florida (39-13, 14-4, No. 5 FCSAA, No. 19 NJCAA) at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Diamondplex in Winter Haven.
