Polk State Soccer Earns Early Wins, #6 National Ranking

With impressive back-to-back wins to open the 2012 campaign, Polk State Soccer, which started the season unranked, is now ranked No. 6 in the nation.

On Wednesday, the Eagles (2-0) defeated Warner University 5-1, following a victory earlier this week over Darton (Albany, Ga.) College, which came to Florida ranked No. 2 in the nation.

The Eagles are ranked No. 6 in the most recent NJCAA poll and No. 15 by the NSCAA.
Head Coach Bill Read said his young team is gelling nicely and ready to take on Broward College on Saturday.

"We're clicking. We know who can play where now, and it's not trial and error," Read said.

In Wednesday's matchup against Warner, freshman midfielder Bre Eldridge had an especially strong game, contributing one goal and two assists.

"She had standout play. From an offensive standpoint, two assists and one goal is a pretty good deal," Read said.

The Eagles posted their first goal nine minutes into the game, with freshman Rachael Montoya scoring off an assist from Eldridge. Halfway into the first half, Eldridge was back at it again, serving up a corner kick that freshman Ashley Lopez slammed into the net. Eldridge wrapped up the first half with her goal.

In the first half of play, Polk had 12 shots on goal and Warner four.
Back on the field for the second half, the Eagles' Hanna Foster, a freshman, scored on a penalty kick after sophomore goalkeeper Darci Butala was taken down by an opposing defender.

Warner responded with a goal-scoring direct kick, but could not overcome Polk's wide lead, which grew even wider with a late-game goal by freshman Gabbi Muina on an assist by sophomore Adelyne Brainard.

Polk had 10 shots on goal in the second half. Warner had five.
"We dominated the game," Read said.
Polk returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. at Broward College in Fort Lauderdale.
