Eagles end road trip with another victory

The Polk State soccer team won its second game of a road trip today, beating Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 3-1 in Perkinston, Miss. 

It was also the third straight win for the Eagles, who improved to 3-2-2 (1-1 in Suncoast Conference). . 

Elyse Fontecchio opened the scoring in the 24th minute from a header on a corner kick.

Kara Houston scored the final goal for the Eagles in the 79th minute. 

Sarah McKinney started in goal for the Eagles, making one save and allowing no goals. 

Elizabeth Cerilli took over goalkeeping duties in the second half. She had two saves and conceded a goal off a corner kick in the 62nd minute. 

"It was nice to finish off the road trip with another win," said Head Coach Steve Linamen. "Our backline played well. I would have liked to see a little stronger play going into the next game against Navarro College, which is ranked fourth in the nation and is last year's national champion runner-up. 

"We are full of talent and we just need to connect a little better moving into attacking third." 

Polk State took 28 shots. Mississippi Gulf Coast recorded three shots and 14 saves. 

The Eagles play Navarro Oct. 3 in Melbourne, Fla.
