Polk State ended its soccer season today on a winning note, blanking Broward College 1-0 in Lakeland on Sophomore Night.

The Eagles got the only goal they would need in the 40th minute, when Cristina Gutierrez scored off of an assist from Shinell McCalla

Goalkeeper Sarah McKinney made 11 saves in the win.

The Eagles took seven shots.

"Since the Georgia trip last week, the team has been really clicking and moving the ball well, so we're excited about finishing the season that way," said Head Coach Steve Linamen.

"Unfortunately it was a little bit later than we preferred to get things rolling, but for them to finish off with a strong game Saturday against the No. 1 team in the nation and then face another regional foe today and pull out the win, we're excited about that."

The Eagles end the season with a 4-9 record.

After the game, sophomores Elizabeth Cerilli, Cristina Gutierrez, Jada Humpheries, Kelsey Lewis, Shinell McCalla, Brooke McKillen, Sarah McKinney, and Kara Quintanilla received on-field recognition.

"This was my first recruiting class," said Linamen, "so being able to personally bring in that first group and see the impact that they've made on the freshmen and our team culture and the program we're trying to build is huge.

"And even though it's only been a year and a half, it seems like I've known them for many years. "
