Eagles Start, Finish Strong, Hold off St. Petersburg to Earn District Championship Bid

JACKSONVILLE - The Polk State College volleyball team remained alive in the 2011 FCSAA Volleyball Tournament with a 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 16-25, 24-26, 17-15) win over St. Petersburg in an elimination match.

Polk took charge early, winning the first two sets before St. Petersburg stormed back to win the next two games. The Eagles won the final set to advance to the District Championship.

DiannMarie Rivera-Romero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had another fantastic game with 14 kills and 16 digs. Yaritza Santiago (Puerto Rico) provided 11 kills, 15 digs and two blocks. Rachel Aguilar (Caracas, Venezuela) dished out 41 assists and Ileanuska Maldonado (Puerto Rico) blasted 21 digs.

Up next for Polk will be a 10 a.m. match on Sunday morning versus Miami-Dade.
