Eagles Upset No. 16 Hillsborough
WINTER HAVEN - The 16th-ranked Hillsborough Community College volleyball team could not find a handle for Polk State College on Thursday night at the Winter Haven Health Center as the Eagles pulled out a 3-1 upset, (25-23, 28-26, 25-19, 25-23).
If history was any indication, the Hawks were the favorites heading into the match. Hillsborough has defeated Polk 13 consecutive times, a record that dates back to 2003. On this night, however the Eagles were the much better team.
Polk (5-1) received another dominant performance from freshman DiannMarie Rivera-Romero (San Juan, Puerto Rico). She led the Eagles with 18 kills, 17 digs and two aces. Yaritza Santiago (Puerto Rico) posted her first career double-double, with 11 kills and 11 digs.
In her second contest of the year, Rachel Aguilar (Caracas, Ven.) prove to be a difference-maker, with four aces, 11 digs, 36 blocks and two kills.
Polk returns to the floor Thursday evening when it meets South Florida Community College at 7 p.m. in Avon Park.
