Eagles Struggle in Miami Dade Tournament

MIAMI - The Polk State College volleyball team posted a 1-3 record this weekend at the Miami-Dade Tournament. The Eagles lost to Miami Dade College 2-3, and College of Central Florida 3-0 on Friday. The Eagles lost to Hillsborough Community College 3-1 and defeated South Florida Community College 3-0. Polk's record is now (13-8, 5-1) for the season.  

In the first match, the Eagles fell to 11th ranked Miami Dade College 25-21, 24-26, 25-22, and 16-25. The Eagles were led by Rachel Aguilar (Caracas, Venezuela) with 41 assists, 14 digs, and three blocks. Kahoriz Feliz Florian (Santo Domingo, DR) added 22 kills and five digs, while DiannMarie Rivera-Romero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) provided 15 kills and 13 digs.

In the second match on Friday, Polk lost to 16th ranked College of Central Florida, 25-22, 25-27, 15-25, 15-25. The Eagles got solid play from Rachel Aguilar (Caracas, Venezuela) with 30 assists, 12 digs and four blocks. Kahoriz Feliz Florian (Santo Domingo, DR) had 12 kills and three digs, while DiannMarie Rivera-Romero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had 12 kills, 11 digs and three blocks.

On Saturday, Polk fell to Hillsborough Community College, 25-21, 20-25, 24-26, 23-25. Rachel Aguilar (Caracas, Venezuela) had 32 assists and nine digs. DiannMarie Rivera-Romero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) chipped in with 12 kills and 10 digs. Yaritza Santiago (Puerto Rico) had eight kills and 12 digs. Ileanuska Maldonado (Puerto Rico) had 18 digs, while Stephanie Harris (Miami, FL) led the team with four blocks.

In the final match, Polk routed South Florida Community 25-15, 25-18, 25-15. Yaritza Santiago (Puerto Rico) had a dominant performance with 11 kills, eight digs, three blocks and two aces. Rachel Aguilar (Caracas, Venezuela) added 30 assists, six digs and two blocks. DiannMarie Rivera-Romero (San Juan, Puerto Rico) had eight kills, two aces and six digs. Stephanie Harris (Miami, FL) finished out a string weekend with four kills and four blocks.

The Eagles will regroup and head to Winter Haven for a date with South Florida Community College on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m.
