Volleyball Begins Season with Two Home Matches

Polk State College Volleyball's defense of its 2011 Suncoast Conference Championship begins tonight at the Winter Haven Health Center against Brevard College.

First serve is at 7 p.m.

Head Coach German DelValle said Polk State fans are in for an exciting season.

"This is a feisty team and the most competitive team I've ever coached," he said.

Returning to the court this year are 2011 FCSAA First Team selections Rachel Aguilar, Stephanie Harris, Ileanushka Maldonado, DiannMarie Rivera-Romero.

Remarkable about this team, DelValle said, is that the skill levels of the incoming freshmen are on par with the sophomores. Nine of the 14 Eagles are freshmen.

"We have a really good rotation. We don't have a starter. Everybody is going to be able to contribute to the team's success," DelValle said. "The freshman class is bringing a lot of energy and character to the team."

On Thursday, the Eagles take on Palm Beach State College, a matchup that will demand the best the teammates have to offer.

"We didn't play Palm Beach last year. They are consistently one of the best teams in the state. It's going to be a great match," Delvalle said.

Delvalle added that the Eagles will need the support of the entire Polk State College community — and beyond — as they defend last year's title.

"We need the fans to come out and represent the Eagles with honor," he said.

The Winter Haven Health Center is located on the Winter Haven campus, 999 Ave. H N.E. Games are free to attend.
