Polk State Posts First Suncoast Victory

The Polk State College volleyball team posted their first Suncoast Conference victory Tuesday over South Florida State College 3-1 in Avon Park.
The Eagles (6-4) won 25-18, 19-25, 25-23, 26-24, to start Suncoast Conference play 1-0.

The Panthers fall to 3-6 and open conference play with a loss.

Polk freshman outside hitter Shatorreia Edgecombe (Dame) led the effort with 15 kills and five blocks. She did not make a hitting error in 26 attempts.

Sophomore outside hitter Diannmarie Rivera-Romero (Puerto Rico) tallied 17 digs, 12 kills and tied her season-high with three aces.

Sophomore middle blocker Cheye-Anne Savage (Hudson) chipped in 11 kills.

Freshman middle blocker Luaztani Turbi (Dominican Republic) tallied six blocks and three kills.

Sophomore setter Ashley Toth (Edgewater) handed out 49 assists.

"They play great and they want it and they work for it," said Polk State College coach German Del Valle. "South Florida is way better than last year."

The Eagles head to Bradenton this weekend for the State College of Florida tournament.

Friday Polk plays Palm B each State at 10 a.m. and Suncoast Conference foe State College of Florida at 3 p.m.

Polk meets Ave Maria at 10:30 a.m. and Odessa College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
