Eagles Split Tri-Match

The No. 4 Polk State College volleyball team posted a 1-1 record Saturday in a tri-match with Daytona State and Palm Beach State at the Winter Haven Health Center.

Polk (12-7) defeated No. 5 Daytona 25-23, 22-25, 28-26, 25-20, and fell to Palm Beach State 25-23, 15-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12. 

Both matches were close.

The two battled nearly point for point in the third set, tying each other 11 times.

Tied for the final time with the Falcons 26-26, Polk sophomore Diannmarie Rivera (Puerto Rico) registered a kill. The Falcons made an error, giving the Eagles a 28-26 set win and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was also an all-out effort by both teams, but Polk carried the momentum, starting with a 10-5 advantage.

The Falcons closed the gap to two points several times before the Eagles stretched it out, winning on a kill by freshman Shatorreia Edgecombe (Dame), who finished with 16 total kills and two blocks.

"Daytona has some phenominal hitters," said Del Valle. "We made an adjustment on their blockers and our players did it."

Rivera tallied 20 digs and 13 kills. Sophomore setter Ashley Toth (Edgewater) doled out 46 assists and four blocks.

Sophomore Ashley Hass (Lyman) posted four aces. Sophomore Cheye Anne Savage (Hudson) added seven kills and five blocks.

Freshman Luaztani Turbi (Dominican Republic) tallied seven blocks.

After dropping the first set to Palm Beach (5-13), the Eagles grabbed the next two sets, 25-15, 25-19.

They led the fifth and deciding set 11-7 on the attack of Savage, Rivera and Toth, but Palm Beach knotted the set 12-12 and scored the final three points of the set for the victory.

Edgecombe posted 18 kills and three blocks in the match.

Rivera recorded 18 digs, 10 kills and two aces.

Freshman libero Rossanna Ramos (Puerto Rico) notched a season-high 32 digs.

Freshman Genesis Castillo (Puerto Rico) scored eight blocks and six kills.

Toth handed out 50 assists.

Polk travels to Pasco-Hernando Tuesday for a non-conference match.
