The No. 17 Polk State College women's volleyball team held strong against Hillsborough Community College (35-4) Friday in the NJCAA Region 8/FSCAA tournament in Jacksonville, but fell to the powerful Hawks, 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-20).
The contest was one of the more competitive the Eagles have played this season against Hillsborough in four meetings.
"We fought," said coach German Del Valle, who has led the Eagles to their third consecutive state tournament. "They did what we asked them to do. They did their best. Hillsborough is really consistent. We changed our strategy and we were successful, but they adjusted as well."
Sophomore Cheye-Anne Savage (Hudson) paced Polk with seven kills. Both freshman Ana Karine-Calvacante (Brazil) and sophomore Diannmarie Rivera (Puerto Rico) each posted five kills.
Sophomore setter Ashley Toth (Edgewater) tallied 18 assists.
Freshman Yara Ramirez (Puerto Rico) posted six digs, four assists and an ace.
Freshman libero Rossanna Ramos (Puerto Rico) registered 10 digs and an ace.
Polk (22-16) remains alive in the double-elimination event at Florida State College of Jacksonville.
The Eagles meet Gulf Coast Saturday at 1 p.m.
