Twice this season Polk State played State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota in volleyball. Twice the Eagles lost.
Today proved different.
Today the Eagles beat the Manatees in three straight games (25-12, 25-16, 25-20) to advance in the consolation bracket of the NJCAA Division 1 Volleyball National Championship in Casper, Wyoming.
Polk State and Salt Lake Community College play for ninth place tomorrow at 10 a.m. Mountain time.
"I think this match might have meant more for us than it did for the Manatees because they already beat us twice," said Head Coach German Del Valle.
"We have such a good relationship with their players and coaches, but I told our players that while we want to be great people and have great character, once we get on the court we need to compete.
"It's great that we won, and it's great that tomorrow we play for ninth place in the nation."
For the Eagles, Shatorreia Edgecombe made 12 kills, three blocks, three digs, and an assist.
Elisabeth Piroli made 30 assists along with 11 digs, three kills, and two blocks.
Rossanna Ramos had seven digs, two aces, and one assist.
Ana Karine Cavalcante contributed six digs, two aces, and one block.
Genesis Castillo made six digs and four blocks.
Suheily Colon added five kills and four blocks.
Zoemy Barreto recorded four kills, an ace, and a dig.

The game between Polk State and Salt Lake will be shown live on NJCAA TV.
