Eagles begin volleyball season with home victory

Polk State opened the 2016 volleyball season with a 3-0 win against Eastern Florida tonight in Winter Haven. 

After taking the first two sets (25-23, 25-14), the Eagles had to come from behind to win the final set 27-25. 

Trailing 18-23, Polk State cut the lead to 20-24 and then scored five straight point, taking a 25-24 lead. After the Titans tied it at 25, the Eagles scored the final two points. 

"It feels good," said Head Coach German Del Valle. "A win is a win. 

"We have a good group. We have nine freshmen, so we have to keep working together to see if we can find togetherness on the court. We definitely have it off the court." 

Dominika Nemcova led the Eagles with 10 kills, two blocks, and two aces. 

Yue Wu had 10 kills, eight digs, and two assists. 

Nicky Pio contributed 31 assists, four digs, three kills, and a block. 

Keisha Santana had seven digs, an assist, and an ace. 

Kathya Garcia tallied seven kills, two digs, and a block. 

Nicole Boots made six digs, two assists, and an ace. 

Anilise Fitzi added five kills and three blocks. 

Veronike Nemcova finished with five kills, four digs, a block, and an ace. 

The Eagles (No. 2 FCSAA, N0. 6 NJCAA) return to action Friday with games against Central Florida and Daytona State at the Hillsborough Community College Kickoff Classic in Tampa.
