Eagles down Hawks 3-0

The Polk State Eagles won a battle of the birds tonight, defeating the Hillsborough Community College Hawks 3-0 in Winter Haven. 

Polk State has won its last three matches. 

Despite trailing 18-22 and 20-24, the Eagles soared back to win the first set 27-25. 

Although they jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the second set, they found themselves trailing 16-17 before rallying for a 25-23 victory. 

The Eagles downed the Hawks in the final set 25-21. 

Head Coach German Del Valle was happy to see the Eagles earn their first Suncoast Conference win. 

"We are playing like a different team now," he said, "and the players understood how important this game was for us. 

"We've been practicing better the last couple of days, and we overcame adversity today. That's a big thing for us. 

"We played well, and it all comes down to following the system." 

Yue Wu led the Eagles with 21 digs, 12 kills, an assist, and a block. 

Nicky Pio recorded 38 assists, eight blocks, three kills, and two digs. 

Kathya Garcia made 16 kills, 10 digs, a block, and a pair of aces. 

Anilise Fitzi had eight kills, three blocks, and a dig. 

Cristina Castillo tallied 13 digs, two assists, and a pair of aces. 

Alejandra Sanabria added four blocks and three kills. 

Aurora Alderman contributed six digs, an assist, and an ace. 

Veronika Nemcova made three kills and a dig. 

Nicole Boots added two digs. 

The Eagles (15-6, 1-3, No. 7 FCSAA, No. 16 NJCAA) continue Suncoast Conference play Thursday at 6 p.m. against South Florida State College in Winter Haven.
