For the second time today, Polk State volleyball faced elimination after losing the first two sets of a match.
And for the second time, the Eagles soared back to win three straight sets and stay alive in the FCSAA State/NJCAA District Volleyball Tournament in Bradenton, Fla.
After defeating Palm Beach earlier today, the Eagles battled the Falcons of Daytona State.
Polk State lost 25-18 and 30-28 before winning 25-23, 25-22, and 15-11.
With the win, the Eagles (No. 2 FCSAA, No. 10 NJCAA) advance to play Central Florida (No. 1 FCSAA, No. 5 NJCAA) tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the District O Championship game. The winner qualifies for the NJCAA Division 1 Volleyball Championship tournament in Casper, Wyo.
"I thought we were tired. We had to battle Palm Beach earlier today, and I think we were running out of gas," said Head Coach German Del Valle.
"But our mental toughness got us this win. And our bench was huge, bringing so much energy to us. Once again, we followed the game plan and we got the win."
Yue Wu made 28 kills, 17 digs, three aces, and an assist.
Kathya Garcia recorded 21 kills, 14 digs, two blocks, an assist, and an ace.
Cristina Castillo added 52 assists, 13 digs, four blocks, a kill, and an ace.
Keisha Santana had 28 digs and three assists.
Anilise Fitzi contributed eight kills, eight blocks, an assist, and a dig.
Aurora Alderman finished with 11 digs and an assist.
Veronika Nemcova made five kills, three blocks, and two digs.
Alejandra Sanabria had two blocks and two digs.
