Eagles down LakeHawks on Sophomore Night

On Sophomore Night, the Polk State Eagles soared past the Lake-Sumter LakeHawks 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-9) in Winter Haven. 

"We played good volleyball tonight," said Head Coach German Del Valle. 

"We've made some little changes in our offense at this part of the season, and I really like the way that we did it. 

"The good thing for us right now is that I play everybody at different times in different lineups, and everybody does their job." 

In pregame remarks, Del Valle praised sophomores Aurora Alderman, Anilise Fitzi, Kathya Garcia, Kaylee Gartino, Dominika Nemcova, Veronika Nemcova, Nicky Pio, and Manuela Vargas for their contributions to the volleyball program. 

"Thank you for two fantastic years," he said. "You have been amazing people to work with." 

Del Valle noted that the sophomores led the 2016 team to a third-place finish in the national championship tournament.   

Garcia, who received pregame recognition for 2016 All-America honors, led Polk State with 13 kills, 10 digs, two blocks, and an ace. 

Pio recorded 18 assists, three blocks, and two digs. 

Vargas had 20 assists and four digs. 

Alderman finished with nine digs and an ace. 

Fitzi made seven kills, seven blocks, and a dig. 

Gartino added five kills and a dig. 

Veronika Nemcova contributed six kills and a dig. 

Dominika Nemcova made five kills, a block, and a dig. 

Diana Carranza tallied 15 digs, two assists, and a pair of aces. 

Chiara Bosetti had eight digs, six kills, and an assist. 

Weiying Wu added three kills and a block.  

The Eagles (11-3, 5-1, No. 4 FCSAA, No. 16 NJCAA) continue Mid-Florida Conference play Thursday against College of Central Florida in Ocala.
