Eagles advance in state tournament

Needing a win today, Polk State rose to the occasion, defeating No. 2 (FCSAA) College of Central Florida 3-0 (15-18, 25-18, 25-16) in the NJCAA District/FCSAA State Volleyball Tournament in Bradenton.

The Eagles (15-7, 7-2, No. 4 FCSAA) improved to 2-1 in the double-elimination tournament. They advance to play Hillsborough Community College today at 6 p.m.

What was the key to victory?

"We just followed the system," said Head Coach German Del Valle.

"We came in with a game plan and we followed it."

The Eagles and the Patriots went 1-1 against each other and finished tied for first place in the Mid-Florida Conference.

"It was an emotional game today, but we just took care of business," said Del Valle.  

Manuela Vargas made a team-high 26 assists, along with six digs, two kills, two blocks, and an ace.

Kathya Garcia led the Eagles in aces with four. She also had 12 digs, eight kills, and two blocks.

Veronika Nemcova recorded 11 kills, two digs, and a block.

Chiara Bosetti finished with 13 kills, four digs, a block, an assist, and an ace. 

Nicky Pio added eight assists and three aces. 

Diana Carranza made eight digs and three assists.

Anilise Fitzi tallied three kills, three blocks, and a dig.

Kaylee Gartino had two kills and two blocks, Dominika Nemcova added two kills and a dig, and Aurora Alderman made two digs.
