Eagles win first match in national tournament

No. 9 seed Polk State defeated No. 8 Panola College 3-0 today on the first day of the NJCAA Division 1 Women's Volleyball Championship in Hutchison, Kan.

The Eagles won 25-17, 25-12, and 25-14. They trailed Panola just once, 1-3 in the third set. 

"We just followed the game plan," said Head Coach German Del Valle. "Our first contact was really good.

"The team that makes more mistakes loses this game, and Panola made a lot of mistakes hitting the ball so we took advantage of that."

Manuela Vargas led Polk State in assists with 26. She added four blocks, three digs, and a pair of aces.

Kathya Garcia made 12 kills, nine digs, a block, and an assist.

Anilise Fitzi recorded seven kills, seven blocks, two digs, and an ace.

Chiara Bosetti had 12 digs, three kills, two blocks, and an ace.

Diana Carranza contributed 10 digs. 

Nicky Pio made three assists, two digs, and an ace. 

Alexa Barral added five kills.

Dominika Nemcova and Veronika Nemcova each made three kills. 

The Eagles (18-8, 7-2, No. 4 FCSAA) play No. 1 seed Miami Dade College (No. 1 NJCAA, No. 1 FCSAA) tonight at 8:30.
