Polk State began Mid-Florida Conference play tonight with a 3-0 winover Eastern Florida State College.
The Eagles got off to a slow start in the first set. After falling behind 2-8, however, the fought back to tie the score at 11. Then with the score tied at 17 the Eagles went on an 8-2 run, winning 25-19.
Polk State took the next two sets 25-17 and 25-20.
Despite the win, Head Coach German Del Valle saw room for improvement.
"I'm not really too happy with the way we did things today," he said.
"I don't think we did enough to take care of our side. Instead, we were depending on them to make mistakes.
"But a win is a win. We have to understand that it's time to play volleyball. It's conference time, and we're not playing tournaments now.
"Hopefully we'll mature and and understand that we have to get better for us to have a chance to be a contender this year."
Nayeli Vilchez led the Eagles in assists (11), adding two kills and two blocks.
Chiara Bosetti made a team-high 10 kills to go with five digs.
Diana Carranza topped the team in digs (11) and made two assists and an ace.
Mariane Cassiano contributed nine kills, four digs, and a pair of aces.
Alexa Barral finished with five kills, a block, and a dig.
Vanessa Tirollo tallied five assists, four digs, and an ace.
Hannah Forbes added two digs and a pair of aces.
The Eagles (13-5, No. 2 FCSAA, No. 11 NJCAA) travel to Ocala on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match with College of Central Florida (10-8, No. 6 FCSAA).
