Sweet 16: Eagles defeat Central Florida for 16th straight win

Undefeated Polk State soared to its 16th straight win tonight, defeating College of Central Florida (No. 3 FCSAA, No. 8 NJCAA) 3-0 in a Mid-Florida Conference match in Winter Haven. 

In the first set, the Eagles (No. 1 FCSAA/NJCAA) had an 18-13 lead, but after calling a timeout the Patriots rallied for four straight points, cutting the deficit to 18-17.   

Polk State then took a timeout and answered with four consecutive points, taking a 22-17 lead. 

After the two teams made four straight service errors, the Eagles won 25-19. 

Polk State took the second set 25-11. 

With the third set tied at 16, the Eagles took a timeout and then rallied for a 25-18 victory. 

"Central Florida put pressure on us, and we handled it well," said Head Coach German Del Valle. 

"We had a game plan and we stuck with it. We keep our composure, stay calm, trust each other, and trust in the system."  

Manuela Ibarguen made 14 kills, eight digs, and an ace. 

Aixa Vigil reached double figures in kills (13) and digs (12), adding a block and an ace. 

Milexa Cardona recorded a team-high 34 assists to go with eight digs, a kill, a block, and an ace.   

Mariane Cassiano contributed nine kills, nine digs, two blocks, and an ace. 

Suared Molina added 14 digs, three assists, and an ace. 

Nina Finderle tallied three kills, two blocks, and an ace. 

Valentina Bahamon finished with two blocks, a kill, a dig, and an assist. 

The Eagles return to action Tuesday against Daytona State (10-2, 2-0, No. 6 FCSAA) at 7 p.m. in  Winter Haven
