No. 1 Polk State ran its record to 17-0 tonight, downing Daytona State 3-0 in Winter Haven.
With the win, the Eagles take sole possession of first place in the Mid-Florida Conference.
In the first set, the Eagles soared to a 7-2 lead, but the Falcons fought back to tie it at 12. The teams then stayed within two points of each other until Polk State prevailed 28-26.
The Eagles trailed in the second set until after a 17-17 tie they pulled away for a 25-22 victory.
Polk State grabbed a 7-3 advantage in set three, but the Falcons scored five straight points to go up 9-8. After taking a 12-10 lead, however the Eagles never trailed, winning 25-18.
"I have a lot of respect for Daytona State," said Head Coach German Del Valle. "They have incredible defense and play with a lot of energy.
"I told our players at the beginning of the first set that we're going to have to hit them with a hammer if we want to beat them.
"I think we went a little bit away from who we are. We were making serving errors and hitting errors that we don't usually do. We have to take care of our side more in the next game. "
Milexa Cardona posted double figures in assists (39) and digs (11) along with two kills and an ace.
Manuela Ibarguen recorded double figures in kills (17) and digs (10).
Aixa Vigil also had a double-double (16 digs, 10 kills) plus two blocks and two assists.
Mariane Cassiano reached doubles in digs (13) and kills (10).
Suared Molina made 13 digs and three assists.
Nina Finderle finished with five kills, two blocks, and a dig.
The Eagles (No. 1 FCSAA, No. 1 NJCAA) return to action Thursday when they host Eastern Florida (7-8, 0-3) at 7 p.m. in Winter Haven on Sophomore Night.
