Polk State Soccer moves to 7-0 with shutout of Florida National

LAKELAND – Polk State Soccer remained perfect on the young season and pitched its third straight shutout with a 5-0 victory over Florida National University on Wednesday.

The Eagles (7-0) controlled the match from start to finish. Polk State dominated in shots 38-3, shots on goal 25-2, and corner kicks 9-0.

"I think every win is a team win and I'm really proud of each individual," Head Coach Jess Belli said. "Every game is an opportunity to get better. We try to set a certain standard. We're 7-0 and I couldn't be prouder."

Sara Estrada and Celine Ottah each scored within the match's first 10 minutes. Ottah and Jillian Johnson each tallied two assists in the win.

"We've improved on our teamwork and we've strived to get better," Ottah said. "My teammates deserve a lot of credit. We're going to continue to work to get better and try to get to nationals."

Kayla Banks capped the first-half scoring with her second goal of the season in the 27th minute to give Polk State a 3-0 lead. Raisa Lugo continued her monster season with a pair of goals in the first five minutes of the second half, giving her 14 for the season.

"We're a team," Lugo said. "I wouldn't be scoring goals without the help of the girls beside me."

While scoring opportunities were few and far between for the Conquistadors, Polk State goalkeepers Sophia Nicholls and Krystal Cruz each recorded a save in the victory. The Eagles have now outscored opponents 26-0 in their last three matches.

Nationally ranked for the first time this season, the Eagles debuted at No. 20 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll this week. They'll remain home for their third and final meeting against Pasco-Hernando State College next Wednesday.
