Box Score 2 MELBOURNE — Polk State Softball has taken the season series from Eastern Florida State College, but it could not complete the sweep. The Eagles and Titans split a pair of pitchers' duels on Tuesday with each team collecting a one-run victory.
Kailey Guethle shined in the circle and at the plate in the first game — a 3-2 Polk State victory. Guethle tossed a complete game while going 2-for-4 with a two-run single at the dish. Trailing 1-0, her third-inning shot to center plated
Suheily Mercado and
Kanitria Antenor to put the Eagles (11-10) ahead for good.
That 2-1 score held until the sixth when Polk State added an insurance run. After
Alexis Thomas doubled with one out,
Jillian Hudson singled her home to double the advantage.
That run would loom large as the Titans pushed one across in the seventh and put the tying run in scoring position. Guethle was able to strike out Makenzie Fore to end the contest.
In the second game, Polk State had no answer for Eastern Florida State's Mandy Hedetniemi-Taylor. Hedetniemi-Taylor yielded just two hits and hit a batter in a shutout as the Titans prevailed 1-0.
A Thomas single and an Antenor double accounted for Polk State's only hits. The Titans' only run off
Kyra Ward came in the third and was of the unearned variety. After Trinity Howard reached on an error, Sam Clark doubled her home.
Polk State will try to bounce back on Thursday when it returns home to take on Florida State College at Jacksonville for a doubleheader. The first game is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
