Box Score WINTER HAVEN — Polk State Softball scored four runs before recording an out, but pitcher
Baileigh Herrera was the story in Monday's 6-0 victory over Luther College JV.
Herrera yielded just one hit in the complete-game shutout while tying a career-high with eight strikeouts. She was perfect through four innings before Izzy Staton singled to open the fifth. That would serve as Luther's lone hit of the day.
Herrera also plated a run with an RBI groundout during a five-run first inning. After
Chelsi Rae' Hebert tripled to open the inning,
Kanitria Antenor drove her home with a single.
Alma Fernandez followed with an RBI double before scoring on an error.
Alexis Thomas added an RBI double and later scored on the aforementioned groundout.
The Eagles (12-12) capped the scoring with a run in the second.
Kailey Guethle doubled home Antenor, who singled and stole a base earlier in the inning.
Eight different Eagles recorded a hit in the victory. While Herrera shined in the win, starter Kenedy Sandoval took the loss in a rough two innings for Luther. Staton tossed four shutout innings of relief for the Vikings.
Polk State will play on consecutive days for the first time this season as it travels to take on No. 9 Seminole State College of Florida on Tuesday. It aims for its first win over a nationally ranked team. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
