Former Polk State standout Harris selected by Cardinals

SEATTLE, Wash. – Another Polk State Baseball player is off the board in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft.

Former shortstop Dakota Harris became the newest member of the St. Louis Cardinals organization when he was selected in the 11th round on Tuesday. Harris was selected with the No. 335 overall pick.

A two-year standout for the Eagles in 2021 and 2022, Harris left as a first-team All-Suncoast Conference selection, and as the FCSAA and NJCAA Defensive Player of the Year. He also became the first Polk State player to win a Rawlings Gold Glove in a decade.

Harris spent his junior year at the University of Oklahoma this past season. Named a semifinalist for the Brooks Wallace Award, which annually goes to the nation's best shortstop, Harris was chosen as an All-Big 12 honorable mention selection.

This past season, Harris led the Sooners with a .332 batting average to go along with seven home runs and 48 RBIs. Harris started 46 games this season and helped Oklahoma finish with a 32-28 record.

Over his two seasons at Polk State, Harris hit .311 with seven career home runs, 84 RBIs, and 37 stolen bases. He also helped the Eagles reach consecutive FCSAA Tournaments. Following his final season at Polk State, Harris was selected to play for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League.

Harris becomes the second former Polk State player selected in this year's draft. Outfielder and former teammate Nelson Taylor was selected seven picks earlier by the Boston Red Sox.
