WINTER HAVEN – The regular season for the 2023-24 athletics year will come to an end this week. Polk State Softball will look to finish strong while Polk State Baseball aims to earn a spot in the FCSAA Tournament. Six of the nine contests held this week for the Eagles will be at home.

PREVIEW:

  • After a 2-2 week, Polk State can clinch a fourth straight FCSAA Tournament berth with one win or one State College of Florida loss to St. Petersburg College. The Eagles are currently tied for fourth in the Citrus Conference. The top five finishers in the conference will receive an automatic berth in the FCSAA Tournament quarterfinals while the sixth-place team will take on the third-place team from the Panhandle Conference in a one-game play-in. 
  • Polk State starting pitcher Evan Koehler tied a career-high with 11 strikeouts in Thursday's 9-2 win over Seminole State College of Florida. Koehler has won his last three starts while posting a 2.84 ERA in 19 innings.
  • Last week, Polk State third baseman Damion Kenealy became the first Eagle to earn FCSAA Player of the Week honors this season. Kenealy leads Polk State in batting average (.352), doubles (15), triples (2), RBIs (44), on-base percentage (.420), and slugging (.526).
  • Florida SouthWestern State's Victor Figueroa enters the final week of the season in the running for the FCSAA triple crown. Figueroa leads the FCSAA in RBIs (69) and is tied with Northwest Florida State College's Cayden Gaskin for the FCSAA lead in batting average (.421) and teammate Nate Early for the FCSAA lead in home runs (16).
  • The Buccaneers won all three meetings with Polk State last season and have won four straight in the series dating back to 2022.

PREVIEW:

  • Polk State dropped 31 of its first 33 Citrus Conference games this season, but has since won three of its last five. The Eagles are a combined 0-6 so far this season against this week's opponents.
  • Infielder Natalie Hiles finished with a career-high three RBIs, thanks to a bases-clearing double to tie the game in the second game of a doubleheader against State College of Florida on Saturday. Hiles had been hitless in her previous 11 at-bats.
  • Florida SouthWestern pitcher Esmee Aimes leads the FCSAA with a 1.29 ERA, which ranks ninth nationally. Aimes threw two scoreless innings in a 12-0 win over the Eagles on March 28.
  • Seminole State's Avery Brewer leads the Citrus Conference with 12 home runs and ranks seventh in the FCSAA with 55 RBIs. Brewer was 1-for-6 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI in the Raiders' doubleheader sweep of Polk State on March 5.
  • St. Petersburg's Kelly Tikel ranks 14th in the FCSAA with a .398 batting average. In the Titans' doubleheader sweep of Polk State on March 14, Tikel went 3-for-5 with four runs scored and three stolen bases.
