Box Score 3 MADEIRA BEACH -- Polk State Softball opened the season with what is expected to be its busiest day of the season. On the first day of the JUCO Classic in Madeira Beach, the Eagles went 1-2 on Friday.
The day couldn't have started much better for Polk State. The Eagles needed just five innings to collect an 8-0 run-rule victory over University of South Carolina in Union.
Polk State scored a pair of runs in each of the first four innings and finished the contest with 13 hits. Sophomores
Savanah Jacobs and
Chelsi Rae' Hebert highlighted the monster performance with two-run homers in consecutive innings.
Nayeli Hernandez finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Karyna Lewis,
Jamie Reinhardt, and
Natalie Hiles also each finished with a pair of hits.
In the circle,
Dee Allen and
Avery Curtis combined for a two-hit shutout. Allen struck out five in her 3.2 innings of work.Â
Originally scheduled to play Pensacola State College, Polk State ended up playing No. 9 College of Central Florida in the middle game of the day. The Eagles fell 9-1 in six innings, but showed they could compete with a top-10 team.
Polk State drew first blood in the second inning when
Sarah Sosa singled in Jacobs. The Patriots went ahead for good the following inning with a pair of runs before adding two more in the fourth before putting the contest out of reach with five runs in the sixth.
Against a potent College of Central Florida lineup, pitchers
Tessa Anderson andÂ
Kaylyn Mitchum did a nice job minimizing the damage. At the plate, however, Polk State was held to just four hits.Â
At the top of the order for the Patriots, Skyler Hodges finished 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs. Hodges was a home run short of the cycle.
In Friday's finale, self-inflicted wounds were too much to overcome. Six errors led to four unearned runs in a 6-3 loss to Georgia Military College.
After
Jamie Glassford stole home in the third inning to tie the game at one, Georgia Military went ahead for good with two runs in the fourth. The Bulldogs added a run in the fifth, but Polk State battled back.
Hitless through four innings, Glassford got the Eagles started in the fifth with a single before scoring her second run of the night on Hernandez's RBI fielder's choice. After Polk State left the tying run on base in the fifth, Georgia Military opened things up with back-to-back RBI doubles from Ansley West and Claire Clements to extend the lead to 6-2 in the sixth.
Polk State got a run back in the bottom of the inning as Lewis tripled before scoring on an RBI single from Hiles. That would be the last of three hits for the game for the Eagles. West and Clements combined for five of the 10 hits for the Bulldogs.
Polk State will continue a busy weekend on Saturday when it takes on South Georgia State College in its home opener. South Georgia State is led by Head Coach Jeff Ellis, Polk State's all-time wins leader. Games are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
