Polk State Softball goes 2-0 on final day of JUCO Kickoff

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MADEIRA BEACH — Polk State Softball will exit the first weekend of the season on a four-game winning streak. The Eagles rolled to a pair of wins on the final day of the JUCO Classic on Sunday.

The Eagles (5-2) opened the day with an 8-0 run-rule victory over Tallahassee State College. Dee Allen was once again dominant in the circle. Allen struck out six and walked just one in a three-hit shutout.

The offense came early for Polk State. Silvia Franzoni got the scoring started with an RBI double in the bottom of the first. Jamie Reinhardt scored Franzoni with an RBI single to cap a two-run first.

After adding a run in the second, Polk State opened things up with a four-run fifth. A three-run blast from Leia Hurst highlighted the frame. An RBI groundout from Karyna Lewis in the sixth ended the contest.

Franzoni, Hurst, Lewis, Reinhardt, and Nayeli Hernandez each finished with two hits. Hurst scored twice in the win.

The U.S. Air Force Academy gave Polk State a bit more resistance in the second game. The Eagles pulled away for a 6-2 victory.

Solo home runs from Chelsi Rae' Hebert and Veronica Fernandez helped the Eagles build an early 2-1 lead. Reinhardt, the starting pitcher, allowed eight hits but limited the Falcons to just two runs over 5.1 innings. Her biggest out of the day came in the third when she induced a flyout to leave the bases loaded.

Lewis and Hebert came through with RBIs in the fourth to push the lead to 4-1. Quality at-bats by Fernandez and Natalie Hiles led to two more runs in the fifth to cap the scoring for the Eagles. Air Force added a run in the sixth.

Franzoni finished with two hits in the win. Fernandez scored twice.

After seven games in three days to open the season, Polk State will finally have a chance to take a breath. The Eagles will take on South Florida State College in their first true road game of the season on Thursday night. Games are slated for 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
