Polk State Basketball’s rally falls short in Citrus opener

Box Score MIAMI — Despite traveling to warmer weather on Saturday afternoon, Polk State Basketball couldn't overcome a cold shooting day. The Eagles' rally fell short in the Citrus Conference opener — a 67-64 loss to Miami Dade College.

The Eagles (12-3, 0-1 Citrus) shot just 32% from the field and a dismal 4-for-19 from beyond the arc. Miami Dade shot just 38% but made five more 3-pointers than Polk State.

The last lead for Polk State came with just under six minutes left in the first half as Cole White's free throw made it 22-21. The Sharks led 37-32 at the break and by as many as 13 points in the second half.

Thanks to 3-pointers from Jordan Brown and Ty Owens, Polk State used an 8-2 run late to close to within three. Owens had two chances from deep to tie the game but was unable to convert.

White led Polk State with 16 points. Owens added 15 points and seven rebounds. Fray Nguimbi finished with a double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds. Faheim Saintleger Meran led the Sharks with a game-high 19 points.

Polk State's three losses this season have come by a combined eight points. The Eagles will aim for their first Citrus Conference win when they return home to host Hillsborough Community College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
